Without always actively knowing it, when we don’t stick to our goals, we create unwanted anxiety, which can create a bigger block to our original goals than we expect. Sounds like a vicious circle, right? So, how can we minimise our blocks, and make our goals more desirable?

DEFINE YOUR GOAL

When you feel that there is a particular area in sport that needs fine tuning, ask ourselves what it really is. Once you’ve defined the area, ask the valuable question: what part of that area do I want to change?

 

An example could be:

  1. A) Area: goal shooting.
  2. B) What I want to change: angles.

Defining your goal makes it easier for you to understand the specifics of your goal which inevitably makes it easier to follow.

BREAK IT DOWN

Breaking your goal into sub-sections gives you clarity. If you think about all the times you have felt frustrated in your sport, it’s probably because you didn’t know exactly what you needed to fix. Because you’ve defined your goal, you can break the goal down. Working with the set of circumstances prescribed by your sport really helps; you might like to practice certain areas on certain practice days and incorporate other concepts of your goal in your spare time. Remember working on your goal outside of designated practice times can boost your confidence in achieving your goal. Achieving from practice to practice has a compound effect to overall success. PREPARE BETTER TO ACHIEVE BETTER.

 

SET REMINDERS

Have you ever heard of invisible influence? Well, it’s the basic concept that you are what you consume. In this case, let’s talk visuals. You become (mentally and physically) what you visually consume. If you surround yourself with reminders, stickers, calendar messages to self on your phone, or pictures, you will be surprised. Thoughts, like living organisms, grow when you feed them. Feed your thoughts positively and at unexpected times and you will become hungry for your goal and create more mental space for it. SET YOURSELF UP FOR SUCCESS!

 

ASK FOR HELP

Asking for help has a few hidden benefits. Not only are you granting yourself another set of ideas, you are holding yourself and somebody else accountable for your goal. Do you ever find it easy to procrastinate? Well, having somebody else involved in your process makes it harder to avoid your goals. When you ask for help, you may receive more than you asked for. When your goal is revealed to others, they can notice when you’re slacking or going wrong. Also, your goal might have more layers to it than you think, and by introducing other perspectives, you allow those layers to rise to the surface and you now have more to work with than you thought. LIGHTEN YOUR LOAD.

 

DO MENTAL CHECKS

When you’re working on something really important to you, anticipate a shift in your mental environment. If you always do the same routine, you must always expect the same result. In other words, if you’re after a different result, you need to change what you always do! Not only should you “do” different, but if you want to do well, you must “invite” different. Mentally, check-in with yourself – am I happy with where I’m at in my goal? Am I surrounding myself with forward thinking people who can help me with my goal? Am I creating a balance in my goal?

ACKNOWLEDGE YOURSELF IN THE PROCESS.

Remember, enjoying the process makes the end goal so much better. By creating a balance and knowing when to put your goal down for a minute, allows you to breath and look forward to working with it again. Although getting to your goal is not always an easy process, it’s important that you achieve your goal still enjoying it.
